in Australia
For 150 years, from 1688 until 1838, the estate of Mylnefield, near Dundee, Scotland, passed from father to son in a family surnamed Mylne (or Milne). In 1838 James Mylne, sixth Mylne of Mynefield, sold this Scottish estate, and by 1840, when the sale of Mylnefield was finalised, James and his brother John had taken up land near Grafton in the then colony of New South Wales, where they established a grazing property that they called Eatonswill. Eatonswill was broken up and sold after the death of James and John's youngest brother, Graham Douglas Mylne, in 1876.
James and John were the first of the Mylnefield Mylnes in Australia, but of their generation only Graham Douglas, who came to Australia in 1859 to take over the management of Eatonswill, had children who themselves had children. The family of Graham Douglas's son Graham Ernest became the Mylnes of Lota in 1913. Lota was sold in 1960, after the death of Graham Ernest, and his descendants can now be found in various parts of Australia.
Graham Douglas Mylnes's descendants are the only surviving descendants of Thomas Mylne, fifth Mylne of Mylnefield. Perhaps there are Australian descendants of earlier Mylnes of Mylnefield that we have yet to meet. If you are one, please get in touch!
This website has two purposes:
-
to make available some information about the Mylnefield Mylnes, both in Scotland and in Austalia, and
-
to facilitate contact among people belonging to, associated with, or interested in the Mylnefield Mylnes.
More will be added over the next months or years. Perhaps you will help to add content to the site.
